Once Human is a free-to-play open-world survival game with a twist: it plays like a looter-shooter, runs on a seasonal server structure that periodically resets your world, and lets you keep certain permanent progression across those resets. That combination confuses a lot of newcomers who treat it like a standard forever-survival game and then panic when the season ends. Understand the season loop early and the whole game makes sense. This guide walks you through survival basics, base placement, your first real weapon build, and what actually carries over.
At its core you'll manage hunger, thirst, and sanity while gathering, crafting, building a base, and fighting mutated enemies called Deviants and the bosses that gate progression. The Memetics tree is your permanent-per-season blueprint system, and your character's account-level unlocks persist between seasons — that split is the key to playing efficiently.
Survival Fundamentals
Before you optimize anything, keep your character alive and functional.
- Watch hunger, thirst, and sanity, but don't overthink food early. Cook simple meals for stat buffs and keep water on hand. Sanity drops in contaminated and high-danger zones — carry a way to restore it and don't linger in "Hazard" areas longer than a run requires.
- Loot everything at first, then get selective. Early on you need raw materials for building and crafting. Once your base is running, prioritize weapon/armor mats, blueprint fragments, and controller/energy links over clutter.
- Deconstruct, don't discard. Breaking down unwanted gear returns materials and mods. It's almost always better than dropping items.
- Cleanse and manage contamination. Contaminated zones deal ongoing damage and drain sanity but hold the best loot. Bring gear with contamination resistance and know your limits before diving into a Hazard region.
Base Building: Location First, Aesthetics Later
Your base is your production engine. New players sink hours into pretty builds before they've placed it well — do it the other way around.
- Build near water and resource nodes. You'll constantly need water, wood, stone, and ore. A base next to those saves enormous travel time. Proximity to a Teleport point is a huge quality-of-life win.
- Prioritize function: crafting benches, farm plots, and power. Get your key stations (weapon and gear benches, cooking, a controller for automation) up before decorating. Automated resource gathering via Deviants and machines is what frees you to actually explore.
- Put your Deviants to work. Deviants aren't just combat pets — many produce food, materials, or buffs when assigned to base facilities. Capturing and assigning production Deviants early massively boosts your economy.
- You can relocate. Your base can be packed up and moved, so don't agonize over the first spot. Place something functional now and upgrade the location as you learn the map.
