A clean first session starts before the title screen. Prepare the system without changing ten settings you cannot later diagnose.
Verify the real storage need
Leave room for installation, unpacking, shader caches, updates, and Windows temporary files. A nearly full SSD can create avoidable problems.
Update with a recovery path
Use the laptop or GPU manufacturer source, record the current driver, and avoid optional firmware changes immediately before play unless they solve a known issue.
Pick a frame-rate target
Match the target to the display and hardware. Stable frame delivery at a lower target usually feels better than a high average with repeated drops.
Change one setting at a time
Start with resolution scale, shadows, effects, and frame cap. Retest the same scene so every change produces evidence.
